MET OFFICE MAN

05 March 2010

MORE than 80 people braved a wintry evening to hear weatherman Alex Hill explore the thorny topic of climate change at Culbokie School Hall at the end of March.

From farmers and engineers to householders and gardeners, changing weather patterns will affect the lives of everyone in the Highlands.

The former TV weatherman, who is now the Met Office’s chief advisor to government in Scotland and Northern Ireland, looked at the most recent predictions revealed in the Government's UK climate change projections.

Mr Hill was unequivocal about the fact that climate change was happening and was caused by the unprecedented release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

A native Glaswegian, after studying at Strathclyde University and Glasgow Tech, Alex Hill joined the Met Office in the early 1970s. He has held a variety of posts, including forecaster at RAF Leuchars and Glasgow Weather Centre, senior forecaster London Weather Centre, and senior forecaster for the ITV National Weather. After a spell as head of London Weather Centre Alex moved back north to take up his current role.
