Does environmental sustainability have a problem with social justice?
Saturday 6 March 2.00 - 4.00
Environmental activists have long been guided by principles of ecological sustainability and virtuous notions of intergenerational justice for people and planet. Put differently, all lives matter. However, as recent events including Black Lives Matter protests and the crisis of the Covid-19 global pandemic have shown, various issues of intragenerational justice, such as racial justice and economic justice, often mediate the everyday life experiences, expectations and outcomes for many people across race and class.
Are the quests for intergenerational justice and intragenerational justice mutually exclusive? Does environmentalism have a social justice problem? If not, or if so, then in what ways might environmental activists’ continued emphasis on future justice intersect with the immediate demands of social justice?
Join us in conversation with Marvina Newton of Black Lives Matter in Leeds and Nick Anim from Transition Town Brixton as they explore how community-based approaches might help provide some answers to those questions.
