I'm not sure if this is an interesting art installation or a perfectly good waste of solar energy (including all the other energy inputs that it took to create it)?

Am i becoming too cynical about energy?

is it right up there with installing solar panels JUST to run your Christmas lights?

Humans have always been quite extravagant in the amount of resources they put into artistic (and religious) expression, and personally I think that's one of our more engaging characteristics. I'm not sure if Christmas lights really fit into the definition of artistic/ religious expression,but maybe that's a question of personal taste! And I suppose if we're going to continue to be artistic, we're better off finding a way of doing that with renewables.

I don't really understand how PV can be powering the Christmas lights though, don't they get switched on after dark?

I think its probably just talking about an equivalent amount of energy although some countries do make much more use of batteries. I guess if you're going to use the energy anyway, better make it renewable.
I've now written up our Hilton Energy Efficiency and Solar project. The church should be just about carbon neutral for electricity over the course of a year. The Light House Cafe is generating 1/3 to 1/2 of annual use for the PV and contributing 2500kW to hot water with the thermal. The energy saving measures have also made substantial energy savings. Meter readings so far are about half what they were.
