Unfortunately I'm not sure we've learnt our lesson at all. We still think we can control nature.

I've been reading 'Silent Spring Revisited' by Conor Jamieson of RSPB. There is a review here http://www.birdwatch.co.uk/channel/reviewitem.asp?review=3159. It provides a good summary of the highs and lows of the environmental movement in the last 50 years. Some disturbing facts though. There are probably 75% less birds around than 50 years ago, so whilst the spring is not actually silent it's a lot quieter than it was and once extremely common birds like sparrows and starlings are now comparatively rare. Whilst DDT was eventually banned here it is still used in some parts of the world and there are still residues here and whole new classes of pesticides are again causing mounting concern. The fight goes on....

It is a really worrying fact that our birds are hugely in decline. My brother, a keen birdwatcher, is only too aware of this on the ground as he has recorded the trends over the last 30 years or more. Sadly I fear this is only the tip of the iceberg - many more species will disappear as climate change wreaks its havoc on the natural environment.
