Andy is a trained ecologist, recently retired and worked for Scottish Natural Heritage (now NatureScot) for 35 years. During that time, he was involved in a wide range of responsibilities, including lead roles relating to strategy and business management of the organisation. Andy was also seconded to The Highland Council in 1998 and spent some time as their environmental policy officer and their first sustainable development officer.  More recently Andy was also seconded to the Highland Wellbeing Alliance and led a number of community initiatives in Ross and Cromarty. He is currently on the Board of Action to Protect Rural Scotland, one of Scotland’s oldest environmental charities, and a member of the British Ecological Society Scottish Policy Group. Closer to home Andy is involved as a board member for the Rosemarkie and Fortrose Trust, the local Ross-shire Local Access Forum and serves as Vice Chair of the Highland Strategic Local Action Group  for the Scottish Government’s Community Development Fund. 

Andy enjoys the outdoors, particularly canoeing and kayaking, anything under canvas, as well as gardening a range of shed-based projects. He’s also active in the paddlesport world, as training and development co-ordinator for Inverness Canoe Club and a board member of PaddleScotland, the national governing body for the sport.
