From a childhood fascination for nature and seeing that all things are connected Jimmie studied fisheries and wildlife ecology.  Initially he was involved in conservation projects in Africa and Asia before returning to UK to work in fisheries management and aquaculture in Sutherland for 12 years.

Though aquaculture has brought many benefits to the Highlands and Islands, its environmental impact has been brought into question - even 30 – 40 years ago.  These concerns led Jimmie to study Human Ecology at Edinburgh University and apply what he learnt to how fish farming could become more sustainable.  In 1999, along with his wife Penny, Aquavision was set up to explore practical solutions to reducing aquaculture’s negative impacts and engage with others to finding solutions.

Many projects were spawned from this vision such as developing with the Soil Association, the first organic standard in aquaculture in the UK.  Other work included establishing the first organic carp farm, running courses in small scale fish farming and aquaponics and numerous pond and water projects.  Our current work involves auditing fish farms to various quality standards, consultancy services and various water projects.

Jimmie’s passion is to be involved with others in creating inspiration and opportunities for communities to see tangible solutions to local environmental challenges which will lead to leaving a worthwhile legacy for future generations to build on.
