I have been in touch with Simon Fairlie at The Scythe Shop in Devon to see if they can run a scything couse for us next year. Simon said that they are trying to organise a network of teachers over the winter so they may well be able to do something for us. I haven’t yet pressed him on cost.

I want to get an idea of how many people might be interested in such a course and who might be willing and able to pay Simons normal rate of around £100 for a weekend. I think this would work if there were about 8 – 10 of us. If we manage to get a training budget together we may be able to offer a subsidy - but this can't be guarenteed at this point.

I should emphasise that Simon is a strong advocate of the Austrian scythe which is a lighter and more finely tuned tool that the old Scottish varieties. The teaching will be based on the use of the Austrian tool. For information about Austrian scythes, scything courses etc, go to http://www.thescytheshop.co.uk/

Please let me know if you are interested.
