An interesting article on the use of Wood as fuel for Heating and cooking.
I think it raises some interesting points, like the gender division of labour and the fact that once you have your source of fuel you still have to transport it.
For me it confirms the need for proper design and redesign of the spaces we live in, a look at the amount of space we actually need and need to burn efficiently with the means of holding on to the energy long after the fire is out. Every effort should be taken to reduce the need to use any form of fuel for heating and probably cooking as well.
But then as the article says, burning wood is than just about heat. |

| I like the stuff about the emotional involvement people get with wood fuel. And I like the idea of taking control of our energy requirements, rather than turning a switch and hoping that someone else has got it right!
As for designing to minimise the requirement for heat, absolutely right, but quite difficult for a lot of existing houses. |

| A serious look at the viability of some of the older houses in our community is needed. It might that they can never be made "fit for purpose" in the "low carbon", "low energy" future. We may need to consider leveling them and starting again.
But when it comes to heating our homes, as with everything else needs a change of attitude. Things like wearing extra layers around the house or sitting wrapped in a wool blanket. Even closing off rooms in the house in winter and only heating one room.
