feature-a new way of doing politics
George Monbiot notes that his South Devon constituency is one of the places in which most people vote for parties to the left of the Tories but which, thanks to our iniquitous first-past-the-post system, end up with Tory MPs.
(In the 2019 general election 229 seats (35%) were won with a minority of the votes cast in that constituency).
Monbiot recommends the adoption of 'People's Primaries' in which a series of public meetings and votes helps to establish which progressive candidate is most likely to defeat the Conservative, and thus enables progressive electors to target their votes more effectively.
