To A Land Unknown (Mahdi Fleifel, 2024)

Two Palestinian cousins, Shatila and Reda, are stranded in Athens.

Living on the fringes of society, they begin to take greater and greater risks in attempting to buy their passage to Germany – where they have a dream of opening a café, and being reunited with their family. With the high-stakes rhythms of a social thriller, To A Land Unknown is both an unsparing look at how the violent and dehumanising infrastructure of occupation, borders, and migration forces people to turn against each other for survival, and a heartbreaking work of yearning for one’s homeland. No matter the conditions, Palestinian resilience sprouts, unruly, like wildflowers in concrete.
