One way of ensuring you have organic seed, reducing costs and carbon emissions from transport is to save your own seed. As those of us who watched the film 'Power of Community' saw, when there is a shortage of oil people are forced to grow their own food but seeds are also transported long distances and if they have no seeds they will not be able to. See the Highland People's Food Seed Bank for ideas. http://thehighlandpeoplesfoodseedbank.webs.com/
We have managed to save radish, cress, parsley, sage, broad beans, runner beans, peas, carrots, roquet, coriander and chives. It mainly involves leaving the odd plant in a row to do what comes naturally, then drying seeds out thoroughly. This sometimes takes 2 years e.g with carrots. It will work best with non hybrid plants.
Look out for some seed swapping in the community markets in the spring and get saving!

It's surprising how little useful seed saving info is online, perhaps we should rectify that? I'm up for compiling something better than anything I've seen so far and have a hunch we could rope in some more expert folks like these (also the first link in the moderate list):
http://www.realseeds.co.uk/index.html

Some of the links below have links to sub-pages with details for specific vegetables or to other sites which might or not be useful.

This is probably the best I've seen:
