| Can anybody suggest why my outdoor-sown lettuce (Winter Density) and carrots (Early Nantes and Chantenay Red Cored) have almost completely failed to germinate both this year and last? Before last year I had no problem with these, but I have also had an increasing problem with peas not germinating over the last few years. | |

| I've had problems with peas, which I've put down to mice - I did best sowing them in pots and covering in clear plastic until they germinated, almost 100% germination that way compared with virtually none sown direct. I'm pretty sure my problems with lettuce sown outdoors were due to slugs, seeds from the same packet did fine in modules. And having decided the slugs got the lettuce, I suspect they probably got my carrots too!
I wonder if sowing a bit later might give them a better chance, they might spend a bit less time at the vulnerable stage. | |
