| Over this summer White tailed bumble bees have taken up residence in my black plastic compost bin.
I discovered this when I was about to empty this particular bin about 3 months ago.
Since then I have left them alone.
What I am trying to find out is
1 will they be long stay squatters?
2 If I try to move some compost might I kill an overwintering queen or is she/ are they more likely to have moved on to look for an even better home?
I have several other bigger bins--help! | |

| According to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust (good website, http://bumblebeeconservation.org) the nest and the old queen don't last beyond the summer, there will be one or more new queens, which hibernate underground, and then come out in spring and create a new nest. So that's good news for your garden! | |
