| There seem to be a number of ways you can set your forum user to receive email notifications for
new comments and private messages (PMs).
The comprehensive way is using your user's 'Control Panel' whose link you'll find at the right hand
end of the dark green bar near the top of the page. When you click on this you are shown a screen
which enables you to change all your important user settings.
On the right side of that screen below the 'Change Password' button you will see:
Unsubscribe from threads
Mass subscribe / unsubscribe to forums
Add / Edit Ignore List
The 'Mass subscribe / unsubscribe to forums' lets you specify which forums you want to receive
email notifications for.
'Unsubscribe from threads' lets you toggle notifications off for specific threads (see later).
'Add / Edit Ignore List' lets you specify which users you don't want to receive email notifications for
when they add a comment.
Private Messages
While on your control panel you can also set email notification for private messages. These are like
an email service within the forum's users. To send a PM click on the user name you want to PM
either via the 'User Listing' (on same green bar as 'Control Panel') link or where it appears on a
post of theirs, this displays a 'User Profile' and below that is 'Send this user a private message',
click on that and the rest should be obvious.
To view your messages click on the 'inbox' link in the line near top of forum display that reads:
'Welcome, Yourname (Logoff). You have 1 message in your inbox (0 new)'
Back to the control panel. On the mid left you'll see two check boxes:
'Receive e-mail notifications when someone sends you a private message?'
'Include the body of the message in update notifications?'
You should be able to work out what these do!
Email notifications for specific threads
As well as the 'Mass subscribe / unsubscribe to forums' you can toggle on / off email notifications
for specific threads. When viewing the thread there is an 'Actions' box at the bottom right of the
screen. Click on 'Toggle e-mail notification' and check / uncheck the subsequent checkbox as you
desire.
Please try / test these things out and report back here on how well or not they work. I don't use
email notifications for forums and it's also difficult for me to find online time to test all
permutations, so please help other users by testing and commenting.

I can't get very far with your instructions at all. The add / ignor button takes me to a strange page unrelated to the forum. I can't work out how to subscibe to a forum and the mass subscribe button just asked me to 'submit' which I did - but I've no idea if it did anything.
Can you give any more help?

| Thanks Penny, I've checked these out and they do occur for 'normal users' but not for administrators.
Have emailed Plexus and asked them to investigate then post a reply to this thread.

| Hi Agric,
I had replied to you in an email about this but see that I should have just posted it here. You had mentioned a bug which had been noticed when you are logged in as a normal user and used the 'Add / Edit Ignore List' option in the user Control Panel. I've fixed that.
However, the email notifications are working as they should (as far as I know). When logged in you can toggle to receive updates of any particular thread. And I believe (I haven't tested this) that you should by default receive updates of any thread you have posted in.
It it also possible to toggle to receive automatic updates of all threads in any given forum. However, the administrator has to turn this on, on a thread-by-thread basis. This is (I believe), because if the forum is even moderately active, your email inbox would be flooded by the various email updates every time a thread is updated. So this option isn't really of much use as hopefully the forum will be reasonably active!
We'll see if the automatic updates works if someone replies to this?

| It seemed the auto update emails were off by default in the overall Forum settings. I've now updated this so people should receive an update email when a thread they have participated in is updated.
[It appears this does not work retro actively, so people may have to opt into updates on already existing threads . They should however receive updates of any threads created from now.]
