As Scottish Ministers debate over dualling the A9 maybe it is time to consider their plans from a Transition view point.
With increase demand for Oil from the BRIC economies and production of oil that has been flat since 2005, not only driving up the price but soon to be restricting access to oil, what future for all our road.
With oil being a major component in our road surfaces, rising oil prices will drive up the price of road maintenance. Could we soon see a situation where rural roads are no longer surfaced?

So what future for the A9? Will they still want spend the money to maintain it as a dualled carriage or will it return to the A9 of 40 years ago, linking all the small villages? Perhaps as a single track road with passing places.

Interesting question - and by extension, what about all the by-passes that are being built - their only point is that if traffic is travelling at 60mph or more and going long distances, it's better to keep it out of village centres. But maybe 60 mph and long distances won't be the future.

Much cheaper to dual the railway lines and run more frequent trains. If we can change them all to electric we might have sufficient renewable power to keep them going

We are part of the rapidly expanding worldwide Transition Towns movement. The Black Isle is a peninsula of about 100 sq miles ENE of Inverness in Scotland, UK.
