| Here's another link on the same subject, which gives a bit more info. http://ourworld.unu.edu/en/plastic-to%20-oil-fantastic/ . It converts 1 kg of plastic into 1 litre of oil - suitable for heating but not for vehicles without further refining. That uses 650 wh of electricity. and assuming that's been produced from fossil fuels at 40% efficiency, then it uses about 1.6 kWh of fossil fuel. 1 litre of heating oil is a bit less than 10 kWh, so that sounds like quite a good payback, although that doesn't take account of the energy to transport the plastic to the machine and the oil to the user.
There's also a suggestion that the machine uses 1 kW, in which case it takes 39 minutes to produce a litre of oil - so a petrol tank-worth (if it could be used in a petrol tank) would take about 26 hours! |

They have bigger machines as well, but the one demonstrated is more of a small demonstration one. Not sure about emissions/ residues if you use it for Chlorine plastics like PVC though. Would be great for plastics such as polystyrene which are currently not recycled at all mainly because they are light and land fill is measured by weight and it would cost a lot to transport them anywhere for recycling. |
